Orem American Legion Post 72 was charted soon after World War II and has been serving the Veterans and youth of the city of Orem since that time.
Post Membership is made up of veterans from WW II, Korea, Panama, Granada, Viet Nam and the current Gulf conflicts. They represent every branch of service to include the Merchant Marines..
The Post primary mission is to provide for the needs of veterans in the community through programs like the November Care Bag visits to those who are in local nursing and care facilities; the VA Hospital Christmas Store; and through the Honor Guard by providing Military Honors for our deceased brothers and sister.
The Post serves the youth of the community by sponsoring students from the local high schools in the American Legion Boys and Girls State programs; the Patrick Henry Oratorical contest; and the National Eagle Scout of the Year program. Each year Post 72 visits High and Jr. High schools with a patriotic program during Freedom Week, and provides Color Guards for Eagle Courts of Honor. The Post sponsors a Sons-of-the-Legion Squadron open to young men whose father, grandfather or great-grandfather was a veteran.
Over the years Post 72 provided programs for Orem City on Memorial Day, Summer Fest, and Veterans' Day and participated in the Provo City Freedom Parade on the 4th of July. They maintain and setup the veterans cross project each year at the Orem City Cemetery.
The Honor Guard plays a vital role in the life of the post and the community. We provide military rite for all brothers and sister anywhere in the north part of the county, from Provo to Camp Williams. Last year our Honor Guard performed Military rites for 96 of our passing comrades. The Honor Guard takes part in Orem City''s Memorial Day, Summer Fest, and Veterans' Day Programs. It also provides patriotic programs at the Jr. high and high schools in the city. For the last five years, we have been invited to take part in Provo City's annual Freedom Day Parade.
